Heb. 10:24-27 “And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and good works: 25 Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching. 26 For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins, 27 But a fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries.”
These verses are speaking of Church attendance, its importance, and the consequences of neglecting it. I know many professing Christians who refuse to go to Church claiming that you do not have to go to be a Christian. That is true concerning salvation, because a person can get saved anywhere. Zacchaeus was saved while up in a tree, (Luke 19), the Samaritan woman was saved at a well where she had gone to get water (John 4), and a thief was saved hanging on a cross just before he died (Luke 23:42, 43 – a death bed confession). I could name many others, for instance, the impotent man at the pool of Bethesda in John 5 was healed while in a crowd of people at an outdoor pool. This fellow knew not who it was that made him whole, but he went to the temple in search of the truth and there he met Jesus, who revealed himself to him and he left there a great witness for Christ. You’ll find this great story in John 5:14 “Afterward Jesus findeth him in the temple, and said unto him, Behold, thou art made whole: sin no more, lest a worse thing come unto thee.” Jesus found him in a place of worship and revealed himself to him. Now, I know that the temple is not the Church, but is a place dedicated for worship, and it is a type of the Church that Jesus would plant and empower on the Day of Pentecost. It was a place where people would assemble together for worship and scripture reading.
I want to emphasize the word “together’ in the text, and define it like this: “with or in proximity to other people.” Also, the word “proximity: means near. So, the scripture says to assemble ourselves together, (in near proximity to other people). That’s why Church houses are built; so, we can come together in one place for worship, fellowship and preaching and teaching the word of God, that the Lord can reveal himself to us in a personal way.
I believe every believer should attend Church personally and physically, if at all possible. I realize that there are many things that can hinder someone’s ability to attend, but if not, we should be there for our benefit and the benefit of other believers, and to honor the Lord.
Jesus said in John 12:26 “If any man serve me, let him follow me; and where I am, there shall also my servant be: if any man serve me, him will my Father honor.”
